And finally I can share some moments form the island life in Vanuatu... 2 months in and I have found myself a life in the bush. With the sun and the sea and the sun and the sea some more... I'm just going to try for sharing some pics for now...
Here is all of Peace Corps Vanuatu: Group 22, when we first got out under the Vanuatu sun, adorned with sarongs and green coconuts and leis and lots of sleep deprivation...
by the way, 6 of us are Oregonians!
Day 2 in Vanuatu. Before we hit the villages. We got to sleep next to the sharks.
Say hello to the incredible Vanuatu style of dress... and here I am with Lucas and Alex, two fellow trainees. And it turns out we have mutual friends in the state of North Carolina. Small world hits small Vanuatu.
Here is the family who housed me and fed me for 6 weeks. My mama, my farmer papa, my strong-spirited sister Ana, and a kid who calls me "mama Laura" because in this country almost everyone is your mama.
My little neighbor trying to get me a papaya. Any 5 or 6-year-old kid can scale a tree like this. The life skills of these little island kids just blows my American mind.
And here is my training fam making the most famous food in Vanuatu: laplap. Cooked in leaves on stones. All you need to make this is materials from your garden and a match. They call the big leaves "local tin foil"
Here is the edge of the village, at my buddy Monique's house... she got to watch this kind of sunset every day. What a nice place to live :)
More to come!

Laura! The traditional clothes that you are wearing look just like a brighter version of what my grandma wears as a nightgown. :)
ReplyDeleteMama Laura you look so hot in those clothes. It makes me miss you even more! By the time you get back you need to know how to climb a tree like that kid, and you have to teach me! I love you and miss you!
